Mark Acierno received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Mississippi State University, followed by an internship in small animal medicine and surgery and a residency in internal medicine at Tufts University. He spent 12 years at Louisiana State University, where he developed one of the world’s most advanced veterinary nephrology and renal replacement therapy programs. He subsequently joined Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he served as Professor, department chair and later as Associate Dean. His clinical and research interests include hypertension, kidney disease, urology, and renal replacement therapies. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications and more than 20 book chapters and is a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology.
Dr. Acierno is currently a veterinary internal medicine consultant with VESPECON (Veterinary Specialty Consultants), an on-demand virtual specialty network that connects primary care veterinarians with board-certified veterinary specialists.
In addition to his veterinary training, Dr. Acierno holds an MBA from Pace University in New York City. He has a previous career in business and finance, which has led to a particular interest in personal finance education for veterinary professionals, a subject he teaches and lectures on in addition to his clinical and scientific work.
Dr. Acierno lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with his wife, Alyssa, and their diverse menagerie of furred, feathered, and scaled friends. Outside of veterinary medicine, he enjoys scuba diving, climbing, hiking, and travel.
